The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the northwest zone has issued a stern warning to the opposition party in Zamfara state, demanding evidence or an apology regarding allegations that the Minister of Defence, Muhammad Bello Matawalle, provided palliatives to bandits. Failure to comply could lead to prosecution, according to the APC.
Speaking at a press conference in Kaduna on Sunday, the Zonal Publicity Secretary of the APC, Musa Mailafiya Mada, stressed the importance of constructive criticism within the bounds of freedom of speech.
Mada accused the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) opposition government in Zamfara of persistently slandering Matawalle, who is now serving as the Minister of State for Defence.
Mada emphasized that the allegations against Matawalle cannot be disregarded.
He called on the sponsors of the purported fake news to either provide concrete evidence of the alleged distribution of foodstuff or issue a public apology to the Minister within two weeks, to be published in at least two national dailies.
“If no action is taken by the sponsors of this fake news by the expiration of the ultimatum on April 14, 2024, legal action will be pursued against them,” Mada stated.
The APC representative condemned what he described as a pattern of character assassination and media trials against party members, particularly Matawalle, since the inception of the current PDP administration in Zamfara.
Mada hinted at ongoing investigations to identify those behind the slanderous allegations and expressed confidence in obtaining evidence to pursue legal recourse.
