In a scene reminiscent of a triumphant return, Hamisu Bala, widely known as ‘Wadume’, was met with an overwhelming show of support as he returned to his hometown in Ibbi, Taraba State, following the completion of his jail term for charges including kidnapping.

Wadume’s arrival on Sunday was marked by a massive turnout of residents, eager to welcome back the man who had become both notorious and celebrated in equal measure.

Arrested in 2019 by the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) led by suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari, Wadume’s release from Kuje Prison in Abuja on Saturday marked the end of a chapter in his tumultuous saga.

Despite the gravity of his crimes, he was greeted by throngs of supporters, including youths and women, who hailed him as a local hero.

Described as a philanthropist and aspiring politician prior to his arrest, Wadume’s return sent ripples through the community, with the town of Ibbi coming to a standstill in his honor.

Accompanied by jubilant supporters, he embarked on a procession through the town before paying a visit to the Chief of Ibbi chiefdom, Alhaji Salihu Danbawuro, at his palace.

Expressing gratitude to the chief and the people of his chiefdom, Wadume acknowledged their unwavering support throughout his ordeal.

He recounted how their prayers and solidarity sustained him during his time behind bars, emphasizing the strength of their bond.

In turn, Chief Danbawuro conveyed his happiness at Wadume’s release, underscoring the community’s enduring loyalty to their embattled benefactor.

The chief’s sentiments echoed the sentiments of many residents who viewed Wadume’s imprisonment as a miscarriage of justice.

The saga surrounding Wadume’s arrest and subsequent escape had gripped the nation, with his brazen evasion of law enforcement leaving a trail of violence and controversy in its wake. In a daring manoeuvre,

Wadume had enlisted the help of a Nigerian Army captain to facilitate his escape from police custody, sparking a deadly confrontation at a military checkpoint.

The ensuing chaos resulted in the deaths of elite policemen and drew widespread condemnation, thrusting Wadume into the national spotlight.

Despite his eventual capture by another IRT team led by Abba Kyari, his status as a folk hero in his hometown remained undiminished.
