A stampede during the distribution of Sallah items at the residence of Senator Aliyu Wamakko in Gawon Nama area of Sokoto has  led to the loss of nine lives and left over 30 individuals injured

Among the deceased was an official of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, adding to the gravity of the situation.

The Sokoto State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has swiftly responded, urging security agencies in the state to launch a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

In a statement issued by Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, the party’s publicity secretary in the state, deep sadness was expressed over the tragic turn of events.

The party extended heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims while emphasizing the need for improved safety measures during such gatherings.

“This is not the first time it is happening at the same place, due to poor arrangements, without regard to the safety of human lives,” remarked the PDP, highlighting the urgent need for better coordination and safety protocols to prevent future tragedies.

The call for investigation and improved safety measures comes amidst concerns raised by the PDP regarding the distribution of Sallah items and the broader issue of ensuring genuine dividends of democracy for the people.

The party emphasized the importance of initiatives aimed at uplifting communities out of poverty rather than temporary gestures that jeopardize lives.

In response to the tragedy, the PDP demanded compensation for the families of the deceased and those injured during the stampede, underscoring the need for accountability and support for the affected individuals.

Meanwhile, authorities including a senior official of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and the spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force, Sokoto State command, confirmed the unfortunate incident.

While details regarding the exact number of casualties remained unclear at the time of reporting, the severity of the situation underscored the urgency for a thorough investigation and enhanced safety measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
