Former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, highlighted leadership and not fuel subsidy removal or exchange rate, as Nigeria’s major problem.

He made this statement during his speech at the Capacity-Enhancement Workshop for Senior Government Officials of Borno State on Monday.

The workshop, with the theme ‘Enhancing Skills of Government Officials in Policy Implementation and Productive Human Resource Management’, took place in Maiduguri, the state capital.

Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, the lead presenter at the workshop, shared that he has only visited Kaduna State five times since leaving almost a year ago. He mentioned that he prefers not to criticize leaders, whether past or current.

He emphasized the importance of having capable individuals to get the job done. A leader’s effectiveness depends on the quality of the people around them.
El-Rufai also highlighted the significance of a strong civil service, noting that a country’s progress is often tied to the quality of its civil service.

“We can see that in Nigeria, we only one problem in Nigeria, it is not food, hunger, exchange rates, not fuel subsidy removal but it is leadership deficit,” he said

El-Rufai expressed his satisfaction with the progress he witnessed in Maiduguri and other parts of Borno, despite the challenges posed by the decade-long Boko Haram insurgency.

He acknowledged that these areas have shown improvement over time, which brought him a sense of gratification.
