The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), has disclosed that only 58,000 out of the 130,000 registered medical doctors renewed their annual practicing license in 2023.
Dr. Fatima Kyari, the Registrar of MDCN, attributed this stark decline to the increasing migration of health workers to other countries, indicating a distressing trend of brain drain in the nation’s healthcare sector.
Dr. Kyari, represented by Deputy Registrar Dr. Victor Kolawole, made this disclosure during the induction/oath-taking ceremony of 20 newly qualified doctors at the Edo State University.
She emphasised the council’s mandate to regulate the practice of medicine and urged other institutions to increase their training quotas to address the shortage of medical professionals.
While addressing the newly qualified doctors, Dr. Kyari stressed the importance of upholding professional integrity and adherence to regulations to maintain the sanctity of the medical profession.
The induction ceremony, a significant milestone for the graduates, was also commended by Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, the Vice Chancellor of the university.
Prof. Aluyor expressed gratitude to the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for his support in advancing medical education and healthcare services in the region.
He highlighted the upgrade of the Central Hospital Auchi to the Edo State University Teaching Hospital, which has significantly improved medical training facilities and healthcare standards in the area.
During the ceremony, guest lecturer Dr. Ofunre Eboreime emphasised the noble nature of the medical profession, underscoring the sacrifices, dedication, and selflessness required of doctors in serving humanity.
Dr. Eboreime emphasized the values of humility, integrity, and resilience in the face of challenges, urging the newly qualified doctors to approach their profession with a sense of purpose and joy in serving others.
In her remarks, the Honorable Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, lauded the achievements of the university under Prof. Aluyor’s leadership and reiterated the state government’s commitment to producing world-class graduates through its education reform agenda.
