Senate Advances Peace Corps Establishment Bill, Other Security Legislation

The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step towards the establishment of the Peace Corps, with the bill passing its first reading after transmission from the House of Representatives.

Sponsored by Senate Leader Sen. Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele, the motion for concurrence is expected shortly, aligning with the National Assembly’s procedures.

The Peace Corps of Nigeria, led by National Commandant Dr. Dickson Akoh, has been operating for over 25 years under the Company and Allied Matters Act (CAMA), with federal recognition from the Ministry of Youth Development and a license from the Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning.

While the bill previously passed in the 8th Assembly, it did not receive presidential assent. However, this renewed effort in the Senate signifies a push for its enactment into law.

In addition to the Peace Corps Bill, the Senate introduced several other security-related bills during its session, including the Nigerian Hunters and Security Service Bill 2024, Legislative Houses (Powers & Privileges Act Amendment) Bill 2024, and National Talent Rehabilitation and Integration Agency (Establishment) Bill 2024.

Other legislative proposals include the Agricultural Research Council Act Amendment Bill 2024 and the Agricultural Harvest and Processing Bill.
