In preparation for its upcoming election, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has cleared 37 contestants for various positions while disqualifying 12 others.
The announcement, made in a document released by the Electoral Committee of the NBA, signals the final stage of candidate vetting ahead of the highly anticipated election scheduled for July 20, 2024.
According to the document dated May 3, 2024, and signed by the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Oluseun Abimbola (SAN), and Secretary Huwaila Ibrahim, the cleared candidates will vie for positions including President, Vice Presidents, General Secretary, Treasurer, Welfare Secretary, Publicity Secretary, Assistant Publicity Secretary, and representatives to the General Council of Bar.
The document stated that in the category of President, contenders include Afam Osigwe (SAN), Tobenna Erojikwe, and Chukwuka Nwabueze (SAN).
It further stated that for the positions of Vice Presidents and other key roles, a diverse pool of candidates has emerged, showcasing the breadth of talent within the legal profession.
It said that the adoption of an electronic voting system by the NBA aims to ensure a seamless and inclusive election process, enabling members to participate from different locations across the country.
While the majority of candidates received clearance to contest, 12 individuals were disqualified from the poll.
PLATFORM TIMES observes that the reasons for their disqualification were not explicitly stated in the public statement, but NBA National Publicity Secretary, Akorede Lawal, affirmed that affected members had been notified of the reasons for their exclusion.
Among those cleared are seasoned legal practitioners and promising newcomers, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences to the table.
