The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Thursday, issued a 48-hour notice to all the deposed emirs to vacate their royal palaces.
The governor officially approved the reappointment of former Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, as the Emir of Kano .
PLATFORM TIMES reports that this move comes as part of a broader effort to undo the controversial changes made to the Kano Emirate Council structure in recent years.
The announcement was made by Kwankwason Tuwita, the Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media to the governor, through a post on X.
Tuwita also shared a video showing Governor Yusuf assenting to a newly passed bill that nullifies the creation of four additional emirates, which had been established alongside the Kano Emirate.
These emirates—Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi—were formed in 2019 under the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
The creation of these emirates was seen as a move to diminish the influence of then-Emir Sanusi, who had been outspoken against Ganduje’s policies.
The restructuring led to Sanusi’s eventual deposition and the appointment of first-class emirs to the new emirates.
Governor Yusuf’s assent to the “Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024,” effectively dissolves the additional emirates and reinstates Sanusi as the sole Emir of Kano.
“I have approved the reappointment of Khalipha Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano,” Governor Yusuf declared, as quoted by his aide.
This mandate underscores the administration’s commitment to restoring the traditional structure of the Kano Emirate.
The repeal of the 2019 amendment and the reappointment of Sanusi follow persistent calls for his reinstatement, which intensified after Yusuf’s electoral victory.
During his campaign, Governor Yusuf had pledged to restore the old Kano Emirate system, appealing to supporters of the traditional structure and those dissatisfied with the previous administration’s reforms.
