The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) announced that 176 Boko Haram insurgents have surrendered, while 57 other individuals suspected of involvement in terrorist activities in the Lake Chad region have been apprehended.

This development was disclosed by Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Ali, the Force Commander of MNJTF’s “Operation Lake Sanity II,” during a press conference at the Officers Mess of Theater Command, JTF Operation Hadin Kai at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri on Tuesday.

Maj.-Gen. Ali detailed the extensive operations initiated to purge the Lake Chad area of remaining terrorist elements.

The operation, which began on April 23, 2023, has seen significant achievements with the collaboration of troops from Cameroon, Chad, and Niger Republics.

Key terrorist strongholds in the region, including Doron Naira, Zanari, and Bagadaza, have been successfully cleared.

“In a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism, the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has achieved significant success in the Lake Chad region, dealing decisively with the terrorist groups operating in the Areas of Responsibility including Cameroon, Chad, and Nigeria in the past month,” Maj.-Gen. Ali stated.

While listing the key achievements, Maj Gen Ali said apart from 176 Boko Haram insurgents surrendered, 57 suspects arrested, 796 rounds of ammunition, one PKM machine gun, five AK-47 rifles, two motorcycles and eight magazines were recovered .

He added that the operation’s effectiveness has been enhanced by air interdictions carried out by national Air Forces from Chad, Nigeria, and Cameroon.

He said these airstrikes have targeted and destroyed critical terrorist logistic bases and staging areas, particularly around Tumbum Fulani, significantly crippling the operational capabilities of the insurgents.

“Over 140 Boko Haram terrorists have been neutralized in these air operations.”
Maj.-Gen. Ali acknowledged the sacrifices made during this phase of the operation, noting the regrettable loss of six multinational troops.

He expressed his condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and wished a swift recovery for the injured.

The Force Commander highlighted the essential support from national operations in Cameroon, Nigeria, and Niger Republic, which has been instrumental in the success of “Operation Lake Sanity II.”
