Ogun State’s Albert Ogunde Hall at the June 12 Cultural Center in Kuto, Abeokuta, was the epicenter of a vibrant Democracy Day celebration this past Wednesday.

The Commonwealth Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON) led the festivities with a powerful display of unity and pride .

State Coordinator Emmanuel Enitan Ojo spearheaded the CYON delegation, which arrived in a wave of specially designed Kampala dresses, symbolising the group’s commitment to democracy.

The hall was adorned with the flags of 20 Commonwealth nations alongside numerous Nigerian flags, reflecting a collective message that democracy flourishes through unity.

The meticulously planned event was a culmination of online and physical meetings by CYON’s management team, aimed at ensuring the organization’s strong presence.

Efforts included designing commemorative dresses, acquiring flags, sponsoring transportation for members, and providing refreshments, all contributing to a memorable and impactful participation.

The atmosphere was electric as presentations highlighted Nigeria’s democratic journey, paying tribute to heroes like M.K.O. Abiola. Governor Dapo Abiodun’s Democracy Day address struck a chord with the attendees, emphasizing the importance of democratic values.

The celebration reached its peak with the ceremonial cutting of the cake, marking the 25th anniversary of unbroken democracy in Nigeria.

CYON members, numbering over 80, stood proudly behind the cake, their faces beaming with enthusiasm.

CYON’s involvement underscored their unwavering commitment to democracy, not just on this day, but as a continual effort towards building a future where the power truly resides with the people.

The organization’s participation served as a call to action, inviting others to join in the pursuit of a stronger, more democratic Nigeria.

In his remarks, Coordinator Emmanuel Enitan Ojo highlighted, “Democracy is a precious gift, and we must all work together to nurture it.

CYON is a vibrant force for change, and we invite everyone to raise their voices, celebrate our achievements, and continue striving for a more democratic Nigeria.”

The event reinforced the spirit of Democracy Day, reminding all present of the importance of unity and the shared responsibility in upholding democratic principles.
