The candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Biodun Oyebanji, has been declared winner of the 2026 Ekiti State governorship election after securing a commanding lead over his closest challengers.
Oyebanji polled 319,224 votes to defeat the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Wole Oluyede, who garnered 40,543 votes, while Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress trailed with 12,872 votes.
The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Oyebanji winner in the early hours of Sunday following the conclusion of collation of results from the 16 local government areas of the state.
Announcing the result, the Chief Returning Officer, Adenike Oladiji, said the APC candidate satisfied the constitutional requirements, having scored the highest number of valid votes cast.
“I, Professor Adenike Oladiji, hereby certify that I am the Returning Officer for the Ekiti State Governorship Election held on June 20, 2026… Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” she stated.
Despite the landslide outcome, the election was reportedly marred by widespread allegations of vote buying and other irregularities across several polling units, drawing criticism from election observers.
The poll, however, was conducted across all local government areas amid tight security presence, with authorities yet to officially respond to concerns raised over the conduct of the exercise.
