A man claiming to be a local hunter, Ogunbunmi Jelili, has been apprehended by the Osun State Police Command for allegedly raping a young woman at gunpoint.

The incident occurred in Poyika Adewumi village, near Olode in the Ife South Local Government Area.

According to reports, the suspect ambushed the 18-year-old victim and her boyfriend, identified only as Daniel, around 8 p.m. while they were out to buy a soft drink.

The alleged attacker threatened the couple with a Dane gun, vowing to kill them if they did not comply with his demands. In a desperate attempt to escape the imminent danger, Daniel managed to flee the scene.

However, Jelili purportedly overpowered the young woman, dragging her into the nearby bush where he forcibly had intercourse with her.

Osun State Police spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the arrest  on Sunday.

Opalola stated that the suspect was apprehended with the Dane gun believed to have been used in the crime.

She assured the public that the case is being taken very seriously and has been transferred to the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) for thorough investigation.

“The suspect, Ogunbunmi Jelili, has been arrested and is in police custody.

“He was found with a Dane gun, which we believe was used to threaten the victims.

“The case has now been handed over to the CID for further investigation,” Opalola said.
