Members of the House of Representatives has cut their salaries by 50 percent for the next six months.
This move is aimed at mitigating the economic hardship and hunger currently afflicting many citizens across the country.
During a session on Thursday, lawmakers unanimously agreed to the salary reduction as part of their commitment to support the Federal Government’s efforts in addressing the skyrocketing cost of living.
The resolution followed the adoption of an amendment to a motion’s prayer moved by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Okezie Kalu.
Kalu called for the sacrifice, emphasising the need for lawmakers to contribute significantly to easing the economic burden on Nigerians.
Kalu’s proposal amended a motion originally brought forward by Rep Isiaka Ayokunle.
Ayokunle’s motion urged proponents of planned nationwide protests to abandon their plans and instead engage in dialogue with the government.
However, Kalu introduced the amendment suggesting a 50 percent salary cut for the lawmakers, which would then be directed towards alleviating the rising cost of foodstuffs and other essentials.
In his address, Kalu stated, “This salary cut will be channeled to supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to address the rising cost of foodstuffs in the country with the view to cushioning the effects of the hardship confronting Nigerians.”
He highlighted that this decision underscores the lawmakers’ dedication to supporting their constituents during these challenging times.
With this decision, each of the 360 members of the House of Representatives will sacrifice half of their N600,000 monthly salary, amounting to N108 million monthly for the next six months.
This collective sacrifice will total N648 million over the half-year period, representing a significant contribution towards the country’s economic stability.
The motion was swiftly adopted by the lawmakers and subsequently referred to the committees on Humanitarian Affairs, Finance, and Budget for implementation and compliance.
