The Ogun State Executive Council has officially appointed Deputy Registrar, Crescent University,Abeokuta, Alhaji Mutiu Adedimeji Oyede-Lawal as the Oloola of Ilara in the Imeko-Afon Local Government Area.

The appointment comes after a keenly contested selection process and the passing of the late monarch, Oba Samuel Alabi Adeluyi, who joined his ancestors on March 20, 2020.

Alhaji Oyede-Lawal, the Deputy Registrar in charge of the School of Postgraduate Studies at Crescent University, Abeokuta, was chosen by the Kingmakers and Regency Council on May 28, 2024.

The stool, vied for by four princes from the Faningbe/Igbaka Ruling House, witnessed a tie between Oyede-Lawal and Elder Olusegun David Opeilu, both securing two votes each.

The decisive vote from the chairman of the kingmakers tipped the scales in favour of Oyede-Lawal, concluding the election with a 3-2 result.

The formal letter of appointment, dated July 17, 2024, and signed by Dr. Rotimiolu Akinlesi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, declared the appointment effective from July 16, 2024.

The letter stated  the significance of Oyede-Lawal’s elevation under Section 22 (1) of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2021.

“I have the greatest pleasure to inform Kabiyesi Alayeluwa, Oba Lawal Mutiu Alani, that the Executive Council of Ogun State, Nigeria, has approved your appointment as the Oloola of Ilara in Imeko-Afon Local Government Area with effect from 16th July, 2024, in accordance with Section 22 (1) of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2021,” the letter stated.

Dr. Akinlesi extended heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the state government, wishing Oba Oyede-Lawal good health, long life, and a prosperous reign.

“By this appointment, you have become a Part 1 Oba and Member of Yewa Traditional Council,” the letter added, noting that a legal notice confirming the appointment would be published in the Ogun State Government Gazette soon.

The emergence of Oba Mutiu Alani Adedimeji Oyede-Lawal as the Oloola of Ilara marks the third instance in six years of Crescent University producing traditional rulers.

Previously, HRM Oba Abdulkabir Obalanlege (Lanlege Ekun II) was crowned the Olota of Ota Kingdom, and HRM Oba Olusola Idris Osolo (Otenibotemole II) was crowned the Oba of Ado-Odo.

Until his appointment, Oba Oyede-Lawal was a pioneer staff member at Crescent University, serving in various capacities for nearly two decades.

He holds a Master’s degree in Education Management from the University of Ibadan, a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University), and a National Certificate of Education in Computer Science/Mathematics from the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta.

Throughout his tenure at Crescent University, Oba Oyede-Lawal served on numerous committees, including the Admissions Committee, Ceremonials Committee, Students’ Disciplinary Committee, Scholarship Committee, and Fundraising Committee, making significant contributions to the institution.
