The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has announced the rescue of another group of 58 Nigerian women and children from human traffickers in Ghana.
This latest operation brings the total number of rescued Nigerians in Accra to 105 in the past three months.
The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Board of Trustees in Ghana, Chief Callistus Elozieuwa, revealed this development during a visit by NiDCOM Chairman, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, to the victims’ location in Accra.
The NiDCOM Head of Media and Public Relations, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, provided further details in a statement released on Saturday.
According to the statement, the victims comprised 47 individuals from Kano State, five from Katsina State, two from Jigawa State, and four from Kaduna State.
This latest rescue operation follows the Nigerian government’s efforts a month ago, where at least 10 teenage girls, aged between 15 and 16, were saved from trafficking and prostitution in Ghana.
Chief Elozieuwa detailed the circumstances of the rescue, explaining that the victims had been lured to Ghana with false promises of a better life, only to find themselves forced into prostitution.
“The rescued women and children are on their way back to Nigeria where they will be properly profiled and counselled by NAPTIP, reunited with their families, and rehabilitated by their various state governments,” the statement read.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa commended the swift action of the NIDO team in Ghana and reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to combating human trafficking and ensuring the welfare of Nigerians abroad.
She emphasised the importance of international collaboration in addressing the scourge of human trafficking and ensuring the safety and dignity of all Nigerian citizens, regardless of their location.
The Nigerian government, through agencies like NiDCOM and NAPTIP, continues to work tirelessly to bring trafficked individuals back home and provide them with the necessary support and rehabilitation to reintegrate into society.
