Hauwa ‘Jaruma‘ Muhammad, the self-proclaimed sex therapist and entrepreneur, has opened up about her harrowing battle with substance abuse, detailing how she was introduced to hard drugs and nearly lost her life to an overdose.
Her shocking confession comes after months of speculation and viral videos suggesting she was undergoing rehabilitation for drug addiction.
During an X Space conversation organized by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Friday, Jaruma provided a detailed account of her descent into drug addiction, a struggle she claims began shortly after she rose to fame.
The entrepreneur, known for her controversial sex enhancement products, said her introduction to drugs was not during her youth or university days, but rather after she became a public figure.
“I once made a video on YouTube discussing something. It was just a plan; I didn’t know the video would go viral and turn me into the Jaruma everyone knows,” she said, recounting her initial steps into the spotlight.
Jaruma explained that she had never been involved in drugs during her secondary school and university years, partly due to being her mother’s only child and the responsibility that came with it.
However, her life took a dark turn when a close friend, who she knew was into drugs, invited her to a hangout.
“One day, a friend who I knew was into drugs (marijuana) invited me to hang out. We were chilling together, and she offered me the marijuana, but I refused, saying I was okay,” Jaruma narrated.
Despite her initial refusal, the friend continued to pressure her, questioning how she managed to relax without smoking or drinking, a common practice among celebrities.
The turning point came when Jaruma was introduced to a hard drug she had never encountered before.
“A few days later, I saw them with a balloon, and I wondered what on earth they were doing with it. I had no idea what it was,” she said.
Unaware of the dangers, Jaruma was persuaded to inhale the substance. The effects were immediate and terrifying.
“I was on the floor, and then my friend said that’s the initial effect, but after I do it one, two, three, four times, I’ll get used to it, and it will become normal, and I won’t be drooling anymore.”
Despite the traumatic experience, Jaruma found herself spiraling deeper into drug use after a chance meeting with Anuoluwapo Adepoju, a Lagos-based plastic surgeon.
According to Jaruma, Adepoju convinced her that drugs could help alleviate her depression, a promise that led her further down the path of addiction.
“I was deceived into believing that the drugs would help fight off my depression, and I kept taking it until I became addicted to substance usage,” she admitted.
Jaruma’s addiction escalated to the point where she began using increasingly dangerous amounts of drugs.
Her dependence on injections provided by Adepoju became so severe that she attempted to take her own life.
She said “One time, I got fed up, and I just wanted to die. I was just tired,” she recalled. In a desperate bid to end her suffering, Jaruma injected herself with ten doses of a drug, far more than her body could handle. “When my workers found me, I was not breathing…
“ As I was becoming unconscious, the needle fell out, and the blood from the big vein was gushing out. It was a horrific sight to see.”
