The Ogun State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has conducted its ward congresses across the state on Saturday.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the  congresses, which took place in all 236 wards across Ogun’s 20 local government areas, were characterized by a peaceful atmosphere, with no reports of violence or disorderliness.

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials were present at the congresses to ensure the credibility of the process.

At Ward 12 and 11 in Abeokuta North, PDP members turned out in large numbers to elect their ward executives.

In Ikenne Local Government, the congress held at Ogere Town Hall, Ward 7, was particularly noteworthy, where Hon. Taiwo Soneye emerged as the Ward Chairman.

Similarly, at Obadore Square, Ward 6, Pastor Segun Ashiru was elected as the Ward Chairman.

Mrs. Olajumoke Esan, the INEC official monitoring the two wards in Ikenne, commended the party members for their peaceful and orderly conduct.

Her sentiments were echoed by the Chairman of the PDP Electoral Committee, Hon. Engr. Solomon B. Maren, who described the congress as “one of the freest and transparent” he has ever witnessed.

“You know it is a family business, a family affair, and as you can see, there is no trouble anywhere,” Maren stated.

“Everybody who wanted to contest was given the right to contest, and they scored the number of votes people wanted to give them.

“Their supporters queued behind them. It is one of the freest and peaceful elections I have ever witnessed in the history of PDP congresses.”

Maren also highlighted the unity among party members, noting that both winners and losers were seen celebrating together.

He called on all stakeholders to set aside their differences and unite for the party’s success in future elections, emphasizing that the PDP is the only true “people’s party” capable of steering Nigeria towards progress.

“This is the time. I want to call on all stakeholders to come together and forget their differences so that we can capture the country, the local governments, and the state,” Maren urged.

“If we don’t get it right as a party, Nigeria will continue to get it wrong.”

Reflecting on the broader implications of the congresses, Maren expressed hope that the transparency and fairness demonstrated would set a precedent for future elections in Nigeria, comparing it to the high standards of electoral processes in more advanced democracies like the United States.

Hon. Dada Awoleye, the State Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, also praised the peaceful conduct of the congresses, stating that the PDP in Ogun State has demonstrated its readiness to take over the mantle of leadership in the state come 2027.

“The PDP members have shown orderliness, maturity, and that Ogun State is ready to take up power in future elections,” Awoleye said.
