EPL: Gallagher reveals truth behind Chelsea exit

Former Chelsea midfielder, Conor Gallagher, has said that the Blues’ inability to guarantee him a long-term future led him to leave Stamford Bridge for Atletico Madrid this summer.

The England international also hit back at a suggestion that Chelsea new manager Enzo Maresca didn’t feel his profile suited his possession-heavy tactics.

The 24-year-old, who is currently on international duty with the England squad ahead of their Nations League clash with Ireland on Saturday said to the media:

“Chelsea make their own decisions and they have brought in some top players on long contracts.

“That wasn’t the situation with me but what happened is good for everyone.

“I opened up my options and looked at the bigger picture. It excited me as soon as I knew Atletico Madrid were interested.”

Speaking on the suggestion that he wasn’t technically good enough for Maresca, Gallagher added, ” I don’t think that is true personally.

“I think last season I had a good season with Chelsea as you could see by Mauricio Pochettino playing me every game and showing his trust in me.”
