Osun: Sports Council Denies Reports Of Power Tussle Between Deputy Gov, Commissioner

The management of the Osun State Sports Council has refuted reports of a power tussle between the Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports Matters, Iyiola Babatunde.

Adewusi also doubles as the state Commissioner for Sports.

The council, led by the General Manager, Rotimi Dunmoye, in a statement by Funmilayo Moradeyo on Sunday, reacted to reports of a power tussle over control of the Sports Ministry.

The statement emphasised that there is no conflict regarding leadership within the Ministry, as the Deputy Governor has been effectively overseeing its operations with full authority as the substantive commissioner.

The statement reads, “There was never any contention over who controls the Sports Ministry. The Deputy Governor, Prince Kolawole Adewusi, has been driving the process, while the Governor’s aides, including Hon. Babatunde, play complementary roles in advancing the Ministry’s objectives,” the statement read.

“The publication that the Deputy Governor bowed to pressure to approve contingent payments following the report by Osun Defender is baseless.”

Dunmoye noted that Adewusi, alongside the Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Abiola Jeremiah Awoyeye, had taken prompt steps to ensure that the state contingent to the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, received their full benefits.

The statement also highlighted that the Deputy Governor is committed to advancing the state’s sports sector in alignment with the vision of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

“The Council praised the significant progress made under the administration and urged media outlets to verify information before publication.

“We dissociate ourselves from any publication that may hinder the ongoing development and achievements in the sports sector,” the statement added.

An Osun based newspaper had earlier reported that a tussle between Kola Adewusi, Commissioner for Sports and Special Needs and the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Sports Matters, Iyiola Babatunde, has continued to affect sports development in the state.

The report also alleged that many files relating to sports and staff of Osun State Sports Council have languished on the table of the Deputy Governor without approval for months due to the power tussle.
