Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court has regained his freedom after spending about one week in the custody of his abductors, bringing relief to his family, the judiciary and residents of the state.
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the judge’s release in a statement issued on Monday by its Public Relations Officer, Bashir Usman, saying the development had also been verified by the judge’s family and the Kebbi State Ministry of Justice.
Although the kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom during the period of captivity, the police said the command maintained its policy of not paying ransom to secure the release of victims.
The command disclosed that security agencies had intensified efforts to track down those responsible for the abduction, assuring that the perpetrators would be arrested and prosecuted.
“The investigation is ongoing, and all those behind the crime will be brought to justice,” the statement said.
The police appealed to residents to volunteer credible information that could assist the investigation, promising that all information received would be treated with strict confidentiality.
The command also appreciated members of the public and other security agencies for their support and cooperation throughout the rescue efforts.
Reacting to the development, a member of Justice Bunza’s family described his return as a moment of gratitude and celebration after days of uncertainty.
“We are filled with joy and gratitude to God for bringing him back safely. It has been a difficult one week, but today our family is celebrating his return,” the relative said.
The family also expressed appreciation to the Kebbi State Judiciary, security agencies, friends and residents for their prayers, encouragement and solidarity during the ordeal.
“We sincerely thank and appreciate the Kebbi State Judiciary, the security agencies and the entire people of Kebbi State who contributed in different ways, offered prayers and sent messages of sympathy. Your concern and support gave us strength, and we are grateful for your solidarity,” the family member added.
According to the family, details surrounding the circumstances of the judge’s release would be disclosed at a later time.
Justice Bunza’s abduction had triggered widespread concern across Kebbi State, with many stakeholders calling for stronger security measures to protect judicial officers and curb the rising wave of kidnappings in the country.
