The Onigbesi of Igbesi, Oba Moses Oyinloye Iwedunmoye I, has regained his freedom after spending five days in the custody of armed abductors in Kwara State.
The traditional ruler of Igbesi community in Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State was released on Thursday, five days after he was abducted by armed men who invaded the community.
A source familiar with the development confirmed the monarch’s release on Thursday.
“The Kabiyesi Onigbesi of Igbesi land was released today,” the source said.
Oba Oyinloye was reportedly abducted when the gunmen stormed Igbesi, a community within Oke-Onigbin town, at about 11pm on Saturday, August 22.
The incident sent residents into panic as the attackers reportedly moved into the community and whisked away the monarch.
The monarch’s release brings to an end days of uncertainty over his whereabouts, while details surrounding how he regained his freedom were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
Igbesi is located in Isin LGA and falls within the Kwara South Senatorial District of the state.
The latest incident has again raised concerns over the security situation in parts of Kwara, particularly rural communities vulnerable to attacks by armed groups.
As of press time, there was no official statement from the Kwara State Police Command on the circumstances surrounding the monarch’s release or whether any suspect had been arrested in connection with the abduction.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the development comes amid growing concerns over attacks and abductions targeting residents and traditional institutions in parts of the country, with rural communities often bearing the brunt of worsening insecurity.
