The Abeokuta Passport Office has launched a new system that drastically reduces the waiting time for passport issuance to just one week after biometric data capture.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the innovation, led by Passport Control Officer ACI Sunday Olubiyi, aligns with the directives of the Honourable Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda for enhanced public service delivery.
Historically, Nigerian passport applicants have faced prolonged waiting periods, often enduring months of delays and uncertainty.
However, the new system at the Abeokuta Passport Office ensures that applicants receive their passports in a significantly shorter time frame after their biometric data is captured.
This improvement marks a monumental shift in efficiency, as highlighted by the Comptroller General of Immigration Service, Kemi Nana Nandap.
The new system has been well-received by applicants, including Mr. Akinbami Olawale, who expressed his amazement at the swift process.
“I was amazed at how quickly I received my passport. I submitted my application, and within three days, I had my passport in hand. It’s unbelievable. All thanks to Ogun State immigration,” Olawale said.
Similarly, Mrs. Adegbite Omowunmi, a teacher and applicant, praised the improvement, noting that the last time she renewed her passport, the process took almost two months.
“This is really a great improvement. We hope to see more of this in the country,” she remarked.
The new system’s success is largely attributed to Assistant Comptroller S.O. Olubiyi, who assumed office in May 2024.
His leadership has been instrumental in implementing this efficient system, reflecting a clear vision of improving public service delivery under the guidance of the new Comptroller of Immigration Service of Ogun State Command, CIS Grace Olaitan Adeoye.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the expedited passport issuance process is a direct response to the directives of Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who has emphasised the need for more efficient and citizen-centred service delivery within the Ministry of Interior.
This initiative also resonates with President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, which aims to enhance public sector efficiency and foster a more responsive government.
