    Abia to hold local government election November 2, as ABSIEC releases timetable

    The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, ABSIEC has unveiled the timetable for the local government elections in the state, picking Saturday, November 2, 2024, as the date.

    ABSIEC noted that the timetable is in line with the powers vested in the Commission under Part II, Paragraph 4(a) of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution (as amended.

    According to the electoral body which has Professor George Chima as its Chairman, the election will mark a pivotal moment for grassroots governance in Abia State, as political parties prepare to field their candidates across the state’s local government areas.

    The timetable as sighted by DAILY POST is as follows:




    Notice of Election: Saturday, 21st September 2024, political party primaries will start on Tuesday, 24th September and end on Wednesday, 2nd October 2024.

    ”Submission of candidates by political parties will start from Friday, 4th October and end Sunday, 6th October 2024 while screening of candidates by ABSIEC will commence on Monday, 7th October and end on Wednesday, 9th October 2024

    ”Hearing of appeals/ complaints by the screening committee will start on Thursday, 10th October and end on Friday, 11th October 2024 while substitution and screening of substituted candidates will be held from Sunday, 13th October – Monday, 14th October 2024.

    The final publication of the candidate list will be from Tuesday, 15th October to Wednesday, 16th October 2024 while campaigns will kick off on Thursday, 17th October and end on Thursday, 31st October 2024.

    The Abia electoral body further said that the local government election would be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, while run-off elections (if applicable) would be held on Sunday, 3rd November 2024.
