The political rift between Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and former governor, Gbenga Daniel, deepened on Monday following a dramatic standoff at a stakeholders’ meeting in the Ogun East Senatorial District.
Tension escalated after Daniel alleged that he was denied entry into a crucial meeting of the All Progressives Congress held at the Adeola Odutola Hall in Ijebu Ode, a development that has further exposed cracks within the party ahead of the 2027 senatorial race.
In a viral video, Daniel, who currently represents Ogun East in the Senate, was seen addressing his supporters from a campaign-branded bus outside the venue, claiming that he and his entourage were barred by organisers believed to be loyal to the governor.
“We are here for our Ogun East APC caucus meeting, but surprisingly, we have been barred. Whatever they do here today is null and void,” Daniel declared.
Sources within the party told PLATFORM TIMES that supporters of Abiodun had taken control of the meeting, effectively shutting out Daniel’s camp in what observers described as a show of political strength in the brewing contest for the Ogun East senatorial ticket.
In a move that is likely to inflame the already tense situation, loyalists of the governor at the meeting reportedly endorsed Abiodun as the consensus candidate for the district’s senatorial seat in 2027.
The endorsement, which came shortly after the exclusion of Daniel and his supporters, is being interpreted as a direct challenge to the former governor’s influence in the zone and a signal of an impending fierce battle for the ticket.
The stakeholders’ meeting, described as an emergency gathering, was aimed to draw key party figures, including past and present lawmakers, local government chairmen, councillors, and other influential actors within the Ogun East APC structure.
Political analysts say the latest development revealed a widening power struggle within the Ogun APC, particularly in Ogun East, where both camps are mobilising support ahead of the next electoral cycle.
With both camps digging in, the unfolding feud is expected to reshape political alignments within the party and could have far-reaching implications for the APC’s cohesion in Ogun State.
