In a heartfelt tribute to his late son, Gbemiga Abiodun, who passed away six years ago, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced the inauguration of a substantial scholarship scheme worth N55 million.

This initiative, known as the “Gbemiga Abiodun Memorial Scholarship Award,” aims to support 550 indigent students in Remo Federal Constituency of Ogun State.

The scholarship program, designed to cater to students in primary and secondary schools, as well as those in vocational and tertiary institutions, will span across all educational levels within its coverage area.

Speaking passionately at the launch ceremony held in Iperu, Ikenne Local Government Area, Governor Abiodun emphasized the importance of ensuring that brilliant students and those facing financial constraints gain access to quality education.

He expressed his commitment to expanding the scholarship’s reach to 1,000 beneficiaries within the next 12 months, making it a minimum number at any given time. Furthermore, he pledged to extend the scholarship to other federal constituencies within the state to maximize its impact.

“It is against this backdrop that my family came up with a scholarship scheme called GBEMIGA ABIODUN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD, in memory of our son, Gbemiga Abiodun,” the governor stated. “This Scholarship award is designed for a period of three (3) years and within the age bracket of 6-25, and selection will be determined by the State Ministry of Education Science and Technology, using the Cumulative Promotion Examination Result obtainable from the OGSERA platform while the beneficiaries for tertiary institutions were recommended by their respective institutions.”

Governor Abiodun emphasized the pivotal role of education in securing a prosperous, developed, and peaceful future.

He noted that this initiative was conceived to celebrate the impactful and eventful life of Gbemiga Abiodun, a young man who dedicated himself to selflessness, consistency, and scholarship. Gbemiga, fondly called DJ Olu, was deeply passionate about sound education until his untimely passing on October 7, 2017.

The governor urged the scholarship beneficiaries to make the most of this opportunity, emphasizing that it was the best way his family could keep the memory of the departed alive.

Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, the governor’s wife, added that the scheme aimed to make a positive impact on the lives of the beneficiaries and their families during these challenging times. She expressed her hope that the program would bring relief and support to the families it serves.

Providing further details about the scholarship scheme, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, the Special Adviser to the governor on Education, Science, and Technology, revealed that the Dapo Abiodun family is fully funding the initiative. Under the programme.

He added that  200 learners from public primary schools will receive N50,000 each to cover their educational materials, 200 students from public secondary schools will be granted N100,000 each for their educational needs, and 100 students in tertiary institutions will receive N250,000 each to support their education.

Arigbabu also explained that dedicated accounts would be opened for primary and secondary school beneficiaries, managed by their head teachers and principals, while those in tertiary institutions would receive their scholarships personally.

With this significant scholarship scheme, Governor Dapo Abiodun’s family continues to honour the memory of their beloved son while providing a ray of hope and educational opportunities to hundreds of deserving students in Ogun State.
