The political landscape of Ogun State may be entering a new phase of succession politics following the endorsement of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the consensus governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 election cycle.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, at an APC caucus meeting held in Abeokuta, reportedly threw his weight behind Adeola’s emergence, a move political observers say could reshape the long-standing pattern of fractured governorship succession in the state.
The endorsement, described by party insiders as a “strategic alignment,” is coming against the backdrop of Ogun State’s history of turbulent political transitions, where outgoing governors have often struggled to install successors due to internal party divisions and competing power blocs.
Since the return of democratic rule in 1999, succession processes in the state have repeatedly been marked by intense rivalry.
Political transitions from former governors Aremo Olusegun Osoba, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and Senator Ibikunle Amosun all ended in contested primaries and intra-party disputes that fractured party cohesion ahead of general elections.
However, Abiodun’s backing of a consensus arrangement is being interpreted within APC circles as an attempt to break that cycle by promoting internal unity and reducing the risk of a divisive primary election.
Party stakeholders who spoke in confidence described the development as a “significant departure from the past,” noting that it reflects an effort to consolidate party structures ahead of 2027 and strengthen APC’s electoral advantage in the state.
Although the endorsement is yet to be formally ratified through the party’s full nomination process, it has already triggered wide political reactions across Ogun’s major blocs, with supporters of the arrangement describing it as a stabilising move for the party.
Senator Adeola, who currently represents Lagos West in the National Assembly and chairs the Senate Committee on Appropriations, has long maintained political and economic ties across Lagos and Ogun States.
His growing influence within APC structures has been seen as a key factor in his emergence as consensus candidate.
Political analysts argue that his legislative experience and cross-state political exposure could shape governance direction in Ogun State if the arrangement is sustained through the party’s formal processes.
Within APC ranks, the development is also being viewed as a test of the party’s ability to manage internal ambitions and maintain cohesion ahead of a critical election cycle.
While reactions continue to trail the endorsement, stakeholders have called for inclusiveness in the unfolding process, warning that consensus politics must be carefully managed to avoid fresh grievances within the party.
