In a significant development, the Pan-Yoruba social-political group, Afenifere, announced on Tuesday that it has finalized its blueprint for restructuring the country.
The group emphasized its inclination towards adopting a parliamentary system of government, aiming to curtail the massive expenses associated with elections and significantly reduce the cost of governance under the current federal system.
During a press briefing after the caucus meeting held at the residence of Yoruba leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Mogaji Gboyega Adejumo, the Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, disclosed that a committee led by Oba Oladipo Olaitan had been working on aggregating the group’s views on restructuring since November last year.
He highlighted that the report would undergo consideration by the association’s executives before being presented to the general assembly for approval.
Afenifere’s spokesperson pointed out that President Bola Tinubu, a prominent figure in the group, had a responsibility to champion the vision of restructuring, given his history of advocating for it.
Adejumo highlighted Tinubu’s legal battles during former President Obasanjo’s tenure and suggested that now, as President, Tinubu must address the call for restructuring.
Afenifere’s proposed parliamentary system of government aims to emulate the model successfully employed by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo in the old Western Region.
The system is envisioned to make governance more efficient and cost-effective, reducing the need for extensive election campaigns and minimizing overall expenditure.
The group plans to present its report to the National Assembly for approval, emphasizing the potential economic benefits of transitioning to a parliamentary system.
