On September 18, 2023, PLATFORM TIMES reported the health crisis Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) students face, especially while trying to access toilet facilities in the school.

The report highlighted how students resort to open defecation due to mismanaged school toilets.

However, a recent report by Vanguard Newspaper revealed that on March 25, 2024, a newly built sanitary facility donated to the school, was commissioned.

The donation was made by TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, in partnership with the Nigeria-Sao Tome & Principe Joint Development Authority (NSTPJDA).

As gathered, this was part of their efforts to address challenges posed by infectious diseases and the need for preventive healthcare.

Speaking at the commissioning of the facility, MD/CE & Country Chair, TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, Mr. Matthieu Bouyer, emphasized the importance of responding to health challenges posed by infectious diseases.

He noted that diseases like Ebola and the COVID-19 pandemic had shown that basic hygiene, such as hand washing and maintaining a good sanitary environment, can significantly protect the populace.

According to the report by Vanguard, the new facility comprised a block of 10 toilets, urinals for males, wash hand basins, hand dryers, tissue holders, a borehole, and a 5.5kva hybrid solar power system.

Mr. Bouyer highlighted that the completion and commissioning of the project were part of TotalEnergies’ and the Nigeria-Sao Tome and Principe JDZ partnership’s corporate social responsibility initiatives.

It was further revealed that the project marked the sixth of similar facilities replicated in tertiary institutions across all the geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

“In addition, the partnership has awarded scholarships to 286 undergraduate students across the country, continuing our investment in health and education for the benefit of the people,” Bouyer stated.

Giving his remarks, Dr. Adeoye Odedeji, MAPOLY Rector, expressed gratitude for the facility, noting that the institution never lobbied for it and had no financial commitment to its construction, providing only the land for the project.
