A Senate hearing on ethics, privileges, and public petitions turned chaotic on Tuesday after a heated confrontation erupted between Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, representing Ebonyi North, and former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili.
The session, which was convened to address a petition filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, saw tensions flare when a petitioner, Zubairu Yakubu, attempted to speak while the committee chairman, Neda Imaseun, was addressing the panel.
Yakubu was ordered to mute his microphone, a directive that prompted Ezekwesili to intervene.
However, her involvement was met with resistance from Nwaebonyi, who was present as a witness for Akpabio. The exchange quickly escalated, with Ezekwesili telling Nwaebonyi to “compose yourself and stop making noise.”
This remark infuriated the senator, who fired back, saying, “You’re a fool. What do you mean? Why are you talking to me like that? I will not take it. You’re an insult to womanhood. People like you cannot be here.”
Ezekwesili, undeterred, retorted by calling Nwaebonyi a “hooligan,” further heightening the confrontation.
The heated argument momentarily disrupted proceedings, forcing the committee to intervene and restore order.
Amidst the chaos, Imaseun announced that the matter was already before a court, leading to the abrupt adjournment of the hearing.
The incident highlights the growing tensions surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition against Akpabio, further fueling political hostilities within the upper legislative chamber.
