Al-Mustapha Advocates  Indigenous Governance System Amidst Nationwide Protests

Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to the late Gen. Sani Abacha and 2023 presidential candidate of the Action Alliance, has  criticized the adoption of Western democratic systems in Nigeria.

In a recent press briefing in Abuja, Al-Mustapha argued that both the parliamentary and presidential systems are misfits for Nigeria’s unique cultural and historical context.

Al-Mustapha stated, “Nigeria must develop a system of government that suits its purpose rather than copy what is being practised in America.”

He stressed  the failure of both systems to align with Nigeria’s heritage and societal norms, calling for a homegrown democratic model tailored to the nation’s specific needs.

This commentary comes amidst violent protests over nationwide hunger, particularly in the North, where demonstrators have called for President Bola Tinubu’s resignation and, alarmingly, waved Russian flags.

Al-Mustapha condemned any calls for a military coup, emphasising that military governance is outdated and counterproductive.

He remarked, “Military subordination to democracy is a clear direction as the world is today. My advice to them (coup mongers) is that military professionalism is what they should canvas for.

Military subordination to democracy is what they should invest in and put all their energies there for.”

Al-Mustapha highlighted the overstretched capacity of Nigeria’s military, currently engaged in combating insurgency, banditry, and other security challenges.

He called for enhanced support for the military to address these issues effectively without resorting to undemocratic means.
