The Nigerian military on Friday inaugurated a General Court-Martial to try officers accused of plotting to overthrow the government, formally commencing proceedings in a case that has drawn national attention.
The sitting, held at the Guards Brigade Scorpion Mess in Asokoro, began under tight security, with the accused officers conveyed to the venue at about 8:53 a.m.
Journalists were barred from the courtroom as proceedings were conducted behind closed doors, while several civil lawyers were sighted at the venue, indicating that the accused persons had legal representation.
The trial marks the culmination of months of internal investigations by the military into an alleged coup plot involving serving personnel.
The case dates back to October 2025 when about 16 military officers, both senior and junior cadres, were arrested over alleged acts of indiscipline.
