The 2026 Amirul Hajj for Ogun State, Shamsudeen Adebayo Apelogun, has assured Nigerian pilgrims and their families of their safety following a tragic accident that left some participants injured during the ongoing pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
Apelogun, who spoke in Mecca, said no pilgrim from Ogun State was affected by the incident, while expressing deep sympathy for those impacted.
He, however, noted that any injured pilgrims connected to the Ogun contingent were receiving prompt medical attention and were responding well to treatment, adding that authorities had strengthened safety and transportation arrangements to avert a recurrence.
“We want to assure families back home that their loved ones are safe. The welfare and protection of all pilgrims remain our top priority,” he said.
The Amirul Hajj urged pilgrims to remain calm and focused on their spiritual obligations, while adhering strictly to safety directives issued by officials overseeing the exercise.
He also cautioned against overcrowding during movements between key pilgrimage sites, stressing the need for cooperation with Saudi authorities and local coordinators.
Apelogun further appealed to relatives in Nigeria not to panic, assuring them that the Ogun State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board remained in constant communication with relevant authorities to ensure the well-being of all participants.
Meanwhile, religious leaders accompanying the pilgrims offered prayers for those affected by the incident and called for unity and mutual support among pilgrims during the period.
