Former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has mourned the death of former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, describing his passing as a major loss to Nigeria and the African continent.
Tukur died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, three days before his 91st birthday.
In a condolence message issued by his media office on Saturday, Amosun described the late elder statesman as one of Nigeria’s finest citizens, whose life was marked by remarkable contributions to public service, politics, governance, business and national development.
The former governor said Tukur’s decades of service had left an enduring imprint on Nigeria’s political and economic development, particularly his contributions to the maritime sector and efforts to promote African economic cooperation.
Amosun recalled that Tukur began his public service career in 1975 when he was appointed General Manager and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority, where he played a significant role in the development of Nigeria’s maritime industry.
He also highlighted Tukur’s involvement in the New Partnership for Africa’s Development and the African Business Roundtable, noting that the initiatives provided platforms through which the late politician contributed to African economic integration and private-sector development.
Beyond business and economic development, Amosun said Tukur played significant roles in Nigeria’s political history, serving as the civilian Governor of the old Gongola State, now Adamawa State, in 1983.
He later served as Minister of Industry between 1993 and 1995 before becoming National Chairman of the PDP in 2012, a position he held until 2014.
Amosun said Tukur’s political career demonstrated his longstanding commitment to public service and national development.
“Our nation’s political landscape has been greatly enriched by the life and contributions of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.
“He distinguished himself through decades of service to Adamawa State, the Northern Region, Nigeria, and the African continent.
“The conferment of the prestigious national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on him, as well as the traditional chieftaincy title of Tafidan Adamawa, are enduring recognitions of his immense contributions to the nation and his community,” Amosun stated.
The former governor extended his condolences to the Tukur family, the government and people of Adamawa State, as well as the late statesman’s political and business associates, friends and other Nigerians mourning his death.
Amosun prayed that Allah grants the deceased Aljannah Firdaus and gives his children, grandchildren, political associates and the entire Tukur family the strength and fortitude to bear the loss.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that Tukur was a prominent figure whose career traversed public administration, politics, business and regional economic development, spanning several decades of Nigeria’s post-independence history.
