Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, finds itself cloaked in palpable unease following unverified reports suggesting the passing of the 84-year-old Olubadan-designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.
Amidst whispers and uncertain murmurs, various quarters of Ibadan experienced an unusual hush as local chiefs and Mogajis scrambled to ascertain the veracity of the circulating rumors.
Sources, speaking with PLATFORM TIMES under anonymity, hinted at the possible demise of the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who awaited confirmation as the next Olubadan of Ibadanland pending approval from the state governor, Seyi Makinde.
Some Ibadan indigines were seen flooding the social media expressing anxiety over the rumour .
Olakulehin, slated for the esteemed position following the recent passing of the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, last week, was regarded as the imminent successor to the late Olubadan.
PLATFORM TIMES noted subdued discussions among traders at Bodija market, reflecting the somber atmosphere engulfing the city.
Both the late Olubadan and Olakulehin hailed from the same Ibadan North East Local Government of Oyo State, further intertwining the gravity of the situation.
Notably, Olakulehin’s son, Sunbo Owolabi, previously served as commissioner for water resources during the tenure of late former governor Isiaka Abiola Ajimobi.
For tradition, the line of succession after Olakulehin points to Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State and senator, who currently presides over the civil line as Otun Olubadan of Ibadan.
The potential transition from Oba Balogun to a new Olubadan heralds forthcoming changes within the Olubadan system, particularly within the Balogun line, where the emergence of a new Olubadan is imminent.
