The daughter of a former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State, Mrs. Abimbola Olajumoke Olawumi, has alleged that her mother sent a distress message moments before she was whisked away by unidentified men from a guest house in Abuja.
Ololade Adeniyi said the last message she received from her mother at about 6:18 p.m. on Sunday stated that some men were attempting to force their way into her room.
Mrs. Olawumi was reportedly taken away by unidentified men dressed in mufti, marking what the family described as her second abduction in recent weeks.
Narrating the incident during an interview on Monday, Ololade said repeated attempts to reach her mother after the distress message proved futile.
“My mum sent me a message around 6:18 p.m. She said some people were trying to forcefully enter her room. That was the last message I got from her,” she said.
She added that when she repeatedly dialled her mother’s phone, a man eventually answered the call.
“I asked who he was because I was calling my mother’s phone. He kept insisting I was calling his number. At that point, I already knew they had succeeded in entering the room,” she alleged.
According to Ololade, her mother had relocated from her Abuja residence to a guest house after unidentified persons allegedly attempted to break into their home last Wednesday.
She said the move followed an earlier incident in July when Mrs. Olawumi was allegedly taken by security operatives.
“Since the incident in July when she was first taken, she hasn’t been staying at home. She moved into a guest house for safety because they had already started trailing us,” she said.
Ololade said she rushed to the guest house after communication with her mother ceased but was informed that three men in civilian clothing had already taken her away.
“They were not wearing uniforms, so nobody could identify whether they were DSS operatives, police officers or officers from the Ekiti Rapid Response Squad, who were the people that took her the last time,” she alleged.
She lamented that the family had yet to establish her mother’s whereabouts more than 12 hours after the incident.
“As I speak, we still don’t know where she is. I have been trying to obtain the CCTV footage from the guest house so we can identify the people who took her, but they have not been forthcoming,” she said.
Ololade also questioned how the men gained access to the room, suggesting that someone might have provided them with a master key.
“What I don’t understand is how they gained access to her room. Somebody must have given them a master key. There are so many loopholes. Something just doesn’t add up,” she said.
She disclosed that although her mother had security personnel assigned to her following previous threats, she had reportedly asked them to keep their distance to avoid attracting attention.
According to her, the security personnel also received messages from Mrs. Olawumi indicating that “there had been a new development” before communication was lost.
Ololade further said she had contacted senior police officers, including officials at the office of the Inspector-General of Police, but received conflicting accounts from different security agencies.
“Everybody keeps telling me they are working on it or trying to track her, but nobody is giving us a concrete answer.
“One person says the State Criminal Investigation Department took her. Another says it was Force Intelligence. Others mention the Rapid Response Squad. If it is the police, someone should be able to tell us exactly where my mother is,” she said.
The daughter alleged that the incidents were politically motivated, claiming the family’s ordeal began after her mother’s involvement in the Ekiti APC governorship primary and subsequent political activities.
She also linked the matter to the alleged abduction of her brother earlier this year, saying her mother had been pursuing legal action over the incident.
Ololade further accused the Ekiti State Government and Governor Biodun Oyebanji of being connected to the alleged persecution of her family, despite official denials.
“When you connect all the dots, you can see everything is related. It is all political. The state government is involved. The governor is involved. Everybody is involved,” she alleged.
Neither the Ekiti State Government nor Governor Oyebanji had responded to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.
The family appealed to the authorities to establish Mrs. Olawumi’s whereabouts and ensure her safety.
“Our only demand is that my mother should be kept safe and that we should be allowed to see and speak with her.
“It has been more than 12 hours. None of her children has heard from her. We don’t know where she is. We don’t know who took her. We just want her back safely,” Ololade said.
