The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the brutal murder of Adeleke Adeyinka, the 40-year-old All Progressives Congress (APC) councillorship candidate for Ward 15 in Abeokuta South Local Government.
The tragic incident which occured on Saturday afternoon, has left the community in shock, with both political leaders and residents calling for swift justice.
Adeleke, a former youth leader in Abeokuta South, was reportedly shot dead in the Jide Jones area, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta .
He had been aspiring to become a councilor in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for November 16.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the killing in a statement to reporters.
She revealed that the assailants, believed to be cultists, arrived in an unregistered Toyota Corolla sport car and opened fire on the APC candidate.
Odutola explained that Adeleke was left dead at the scene while the attackers fled to an unknown location.
“A shooting incident and murder occurred around 12:30 p.m. The assailants opened fire, killing 40-year-old Adeyinka Adeleke, who was left dead at the scene before the perpetrators fled to an unknown location,” Odutola stated.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that a concerned citizen had reported the incident, and initial investigations suggest that the attackers were armed with a pump-action shotgun and a pistol.
Despite the severity of the crime, Adeleke’s body was reportedly taken away for burial without any formal medical examination or autopsy.
“Another individual, Adesanya Adeyinka, requested the body for burial without seeking a doctor’s examination or autopsy,” Odutola added.
He lamented that the action would create a critical gap in forensic investigation that could have provided more clues in identifying the killers.
The Ogun State Police Command says it has since launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspects, vowing that no stone will be left unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State APC Youth Leaders’ Forum has expressed its outrage and deep sorrow over Adeleke’s murder.
In a strongly worded statement signed by Comrade Kabir Odedairo, the youth leader of Abeokuta South, and Comrade Timothy Odedina, the forum’s Public Relations Officer, the group condemned the heinous act and called for a full investigation.
“We are deeply saddened and outraged by the brutal murder of Adeleke Adeyinka.
“This senseless and horrific act has left our community shaken and grieving,” the statement read.
The youth leaders described Adeleke as a promising young politician and a dedicated member of the APC.
His role as the former youth leader of Ward 15 and his contributions to the party and local community were emphasized.
The forum also raised concerns about the manner of his killing, noting that Adeleke was not only shot but also stoned to death by unknown assailants in a tinted vehicle.
“As a forum, we demand a thorough investigation into this heinous crime and call on the relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served.
“The fact that Adeleke was shot and stoned to death is particularly disturbing and warrants immediate attention from law enforcement agencies,” the statement added.
The forum listed three key demands in response to the murder which were ; Immediate and thorough investigation, justice for the deceased and increased security in the area .
While demanding Immediate and thorough investigation into Adeleke’s murder, the forum urged the authorities to ensure that those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted.
It also called for increased security,urging the police to step up patrols and security measures in the area to prevent further violence.
Adeleke’s death has reignited concerns about political violence and insecurity in Ogun State, especially ahead of the local government elections.
The APC Youth Leaders’ Forum extended its deepest condolences to Adeleke’s family, friends, and colleagues, while urging the police and other security agencies to act swiftly.
Adeleke’s contributions to the APC and the Ogun State youth community will not be forgotten, the forum noted, adding that his untimely death was a significant loss to the entire state.
