Fresh tension has gripped the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State ahead of its Ogun East senatorial primary, as loyalists of a former governor, Gbenga Daniel, have raised the alarm over alleged plots to unleash violence and suppress voters during the exercise.
The обеспed members, under the aegis of concerned APC stakeholders in Ogun East Senatorial District, in a petition dated May 13, 2026, accused allies of Governor Dapo Abiodun of orchestrating intimidation and harassment targeted at perceived supporters of Daniel across the nine local government areas of the district.
The petition, addressed to the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, warned that the direct primary scheduled for May 18 could degenerate into chaos if urgent intervention was not made.
According to the group, several party members loyal to Daniel had allegedly been prevented from attending ward meetings, a development they claimed was being driven by some party executives acting on instructions from the state leadership.
They further alleged that threats had been issued to deter the affected members from participating in the primary, describing the situation as a “gross violation” of democratic norms and the party’s constitution.
The petitioners also raised concerns over what they described as intelligence reports of plans to mobilise thugs to disrupt voting at designated centres, warning that such moves could lead to violence, voter suppression and a breakdown of law and order.
They cautioned that any failure to address the situation could damage the credibility of the APC and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
The group called on the Ogun State APC Chairman, Yemi Sanusi, alongside other party leaders at the state, local government and ward levels, to rein in erring members and ensure a level playing field for all aspirants.
They also urged security agencies, including the police, the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, to immediately investigate the allegations and provide adequate security to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
The petitioners stressed the need for the party’s national leadership to act swiftly and deploy credible, neutral officials to oversee the primary across the 103 wards in the senatorial district.
“As a stitch in time saves nine, urgent intervention is necessary to preserve peace, fairness and public confidence in the electoral process,” the petition partly read.
Efforts to get responses from the Ogun State Government and the APC leadership in the state were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
