Appoint Information Systems Experts To Top Roles, Babcock Don Urges

A Professor of Computer Science at Babcock University, Adewale Adebayo, has called for the inclusion of information systems professionals in top-level management positions across organizations, including tertiary institutions.

Adebayo made the call while delivering Babcock University’s 53rd inaugural lecture titled “Information System and Its Security – Information Quest for Godly Exploitation.”

The don argued that in an era increasingly driven by data, effective information management has become essential to institutional success. He said appointing computing-savvy managers would enhance strategic decision-making and improve responses to the demands of government, students, and other stakeholders.

“The role of information systems in supporting management and strategic decisions cannot be overstated. Organizations must appoint experts who understand and can manage their information needs effectively,” Adebayo said.

He stressed the importance of embedding security protocols into information systems from the design phase, rather than treating security as an afterthought.

“Built-in security measures from the design stage can help prevent issues and ensure productivity,” he said.

The professor also advocated ethical computing practices, starting from the family unit, as a foundation for broader societal impact.

He advised organizations to take ownership of their data and properly manage their presence on social media, recommending formalized use for official purposes through customized and paid platforms.

In addition, Adebayo urged employers—particularly in the education sector—to prioritize industry experience during recruitment.

He maintained that practical exposure should be duly weighted during assessments for teaching roles.

“Relevant industry experience should not be sidelined but recognised and rewarded in the hiring process,” he added.

The lecture formed part of Babcock University’s ongoing efforts to promote thought leadership and innovation in Nigeria’s higher education space.
