The Nigerian Army has denied that soldiers looted Barakat Stores during the recent #EndbadGovernance protest in Kano.
Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, while responding to allegations circulating on social media clarified the situation, stating that soldiers intervened to recover items stolen by hoodlums exploiting the chaos.
Contrary to the misleading video, Major General Nwachukwu stated that soldiers from the 3 Brigade of the Nigerian Army acted upon a distress call reporting an attack on Barakat Stores.
Their timely arrival thwarted the looters’ plans, preventing extensive theft.
“The soldiers intercepted some of the hoodlums and recovered several looted items,” he explained.
“During the recovery operation, the troops received another urgent distress call about a planned attack on the Kano State Government House.
“Given the immediacy of the threat, the soldiers redirected their efforts to protect the government facility.
“This strategic decision was made despite the chaotic scene, where hoodlums were seen attempting to steal from the military truck transporting the recovered goods.
“The fluidity and urgency of the distress call explain why troops in the video were not overly bothered when some hoodlums even stole from the troops’ truck while in motion. At that juncture, preventing the attack on the Government House was more expedient,” Nwachukwu detailed.
Following the prevention of the attack on the Government House, Major General Nwachukwu said, the soldiers safely returned the recovered items, including gallons of cooking oil, to Barakat Stores.
He said the store management has expressed its gratitude in a letter conveyed by the general manager, praising the soldiers’ professionalism and swift action.
Major General Nwachukwu commended the troops for their dedication to maintaining law and order and preventing further looting.
“These actions demonstrate the Nigerian Army’s commitment and resolve to protect the lives and property of the citizenry,” he stated.
He also cautioned the public against spreading misinformation, urging people to verify facts before forming conclusions.
