The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), to prosecute the Olu of Obafemi, Oba Taofeek Kayode Owolabi, under the State Anti-Land Grabbing Law, 2016.
The resolution also recommends the immediate suspension of the monarch by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and the State Council of Obas.
This decision follows allegations that Oba Owolabi engaged in activities capable of disrupting peace in Agboro-Olatunde village, located in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the Assembly’s resolution was based on a report presented by the House Committees on Justice, Ethics, and Public Petitions, which investigated a petition filed by the Agboro Olatunde Community Development Association.
The Vice-Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Tella Babatunde, presented the report, which was adopted by the House following a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, and seconded by the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye.
The resolution was passed unanimously through a voice vote.
The report highlights several key findings, including a land dispute between the residents of Agboro-Olatunde village and Oba Owolabi.
The Assembly’s investigation revealed that the monarch allegedly brought a developer to the village, resulting in the clearing of over 30 hectares of land and the destruction of cash crops valued at millions of naira.
The monarch reportedly lacked proper documentation for the disputed land, a violation of the state’s Anti-Land Grabbing Law.
In light of these findings, the Assembly’s resolution calls for the prosecution of Oba Owolabi and his suspension from office, emphasizing the need to maintain peace and uphold the law in the affected community.
