Atiku Has Not Joined SDP, Says Aide

A media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Abdul Rasheeth, has dismissed reports claiming that his principal has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The speculation, which circulated on social media, suggested that Atiku, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, had switched allegiance to the SDP despite ongoing discussions about a possible merger involving Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Reacting to the claim on X (formerly Twitter), Rasheeth described it as “misinformation” and urged the public to disregard it.

“Disregard the misinformation! Atiku Abubakar has neither joined nor is joining the SDP. This baseless speculation is a deliberate attempt to mislead,” he wrote.

The clarification comes amid heightened political maneuvers ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures exploring possible alliances to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
