Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has alerted security agencies to what he described as a suspicious payment made into his private bank account by an individual or entity he said he does not know.
Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, saying the transaction carried the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
According to Shaibu, neither Atiku nor his campaign organisation solicited, authorised or had prior knowledge of the payment.
He said the account into which the money was paid was a strictly private account and its details were not publicly available.
“The circumstances surrounding the transfer are deeply troubling to His Excellency,” Shaibu said.
He questioned how an unknown person or entity could have obtained the confidential banking details of the former Vice-President, particularly when the account was not used publicly for campaign fundraising.
Shaibu said the incident raised serious concerns about the security of private financial information in the country.
He warned that if the confidential banking details of a former Vice-President and presidential candidate could allegedly be obtained and used without his knowledge, ordinary Nigerians could also be vulnerable.
The Atiku camp further raised the possibility that the account information could have been accessed by individuals with privileged access to confidential data.
Shaibu described such a possibility, if established, as a serious abuse of power that could expose the account holder to criminal threats.
He said the alleged compromise of private banking information could potentially put individuals at risk from kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, fraudsters and other criminal elements.
The former Vice-President’s camp also linked the development to what it described as a series of suspicious activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what it characterised as attempts at character assassination against Atiku.
“Such desperate antics have failed before and will fail again,” the statement said.
The former Vice-President, according to his spokesperson, remains focused on his political ambition and what he described as his commitment to providing credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
The statement did not disclose the amount credited to the account or identify the bank involved.
It was also not immediately clear from the statement whether the bank had commenced an investigation into the transaction or whether any security agency had responded to Atiku’s complaint.
