A retired operative of the Department of State Services, Nwaogu Ihechimere Ezeakolam, was on Thursday arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged membership of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and offences bordering on terrorism. The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has expressed concern over what it described as the growing connection between sexual and gender-based violence, ritual practices, cybercrime and other organised criminal activities in Nigeria. The agency called on journalists to go beyond reporting rape and other forms of sexual abuse by investigating the underlying social, cultural, economic and criminal factors fueling such offences. The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested the manager of Mbiokporo Cemetery and another suspect over the alleged unlawful exhumation of a freshly buried corpse and theft of its casket. The police said the suspects allegedly dug up the grave of a recently interred person, removed the corpse from the casket and attempted to sell the casket for financial gain. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has disclosed that no fewer than 18 state governments are currently under investigation over alleged mismanagement of public funds, as the anti-graft agency defended its decision to freeze an account belonging to the Osun State Government. The commission, however, declined to disclose the identities of the affected states, insisting that revealing their names at this stage could jeopardise ongoing investigations.
