In the wake of the recent military coup in the Republic of Niger, the governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have issued a strong advisory to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to avoid resorting to military intervention as a means of restoring democratic governance.
The PDP governors conveyed this counsel during a meeting held by the PDP Governors’ Forum in Abuja on Saturday.
The Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, read out a communique that emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the crisis.
The communique called for a cautious approach and encouraged the Nigerian government, under the leadership of President Tinubu, to explore all avenues of peaceful resolution before considering any form of military action.
Governor Mohammed reiterated, “Rather all tools of dialogue and diplomacy should be further employed,” emphasizing the need for peaceful negotiations over violent confrontation.
This sentiment was echoed by the PDP governors, who collectively underscored the importance of preserving stability and peace in the region.
In addition to their stance on the Niger coup crisis, the PDP governors also expressed concern about the cost of governance within Nigeria.
They called upon the Federal Government to demonstrate leadership by reducing the size of the cabinet, suggesting a reduction in the number of ministers and special advisers.
The goal of this proposed reduction is to enhance the health of the nation’s economy.
Furthermore, the PDP governors reaffirmed their commitment to upholding good governance, transparency, and accountability at both the state and national levels.
They reiterated their dedication to maintaining party discipline and a zero-tolerance policy for anti-party activities and sabotage.
The governors emphasized that the unity of the party must be safeguarded, and no individual or group should be allowed to undermine its processes.
During the meeting, the PDP governors conveyed their unwavering support for the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the PDP Vice Presidential candidate, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.
They revealed their intention to challenge the outcome of the presidential election at the tribunal and vowed to pursue justice through lawful means.
The governors also lauded the establishment of Campaign Councils for the upcoming off-session elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states.
They called upon the Campaign Councils to ensure victory for the PDP in these states and praised the party’s dedication to electoral success.
Notably absent from the meeting were governors from Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Oyo, and Plateau states.
The PDP National Working Committee (NWC) members, however, participated in the discussions.
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, speaking to reporters on the sidelines, reaffirmed his commitment to the state’s development and unity, irrespective of political affiliations.
He advocated for political maturity and cooperation among all parties, highlighting the common goal of improving the lives of the people of Osun.
Adeleke encouraged support for Adegboyega Oyetola’s nomination as a minister, emphasizing the importance of unity in pursuit of the state’s progress.
He underscored that political differences should not impede the collective efforts aimed at advancing Osun’s interests and addressing issues such as poverty that affect all citizens.
