Babcock University has charged its newly admitted postgraduate students to embrace discipline, integrity, hard work and academic excellence as they begin their programmes at the institution.
The university gave the charge during the orientation programme organised by the College of Postgraduate Studies to acquaint the new students with academic requirements, registration procedures and other guidelines for a successful postgraduate experience.
The Provost of the College, Prof. Yacob Haliso, who spoke at the event alongside his deputies, Prof. Emmanuel Ajike and Dr Sunday Audu, described Babcock as a university committed to transparency, academic equality and peaceful coexistence.
Haliso urged the students to prepare for an intensive academic session, stressing that serious academic work would commence immediately and continue until the Christmas break.
He said, “From the day of orientation until you go for Christmas break, you will have intensive classes with intentional, honest, Christian, well-friendly, godly lecturers, without intimidation.”
The provost said the university provided an environment where students could pursue their academic goals irrespective of their religious or cultural backgrounds.
He added, “I want to welcome you to a campus of peace, a campus of tranquillity, a campus of transparency, a campus of academic equality, no discriminatory university.
“Whether you are a Muslim, whether you are a non-Seventh-day Adventist, whatever you are, you are made in the image of only one God, and we treat you as such.”
Haliso also congratulated the international students admitted into the postgraduate programmes, assuring them that the university would create opportunities for them to interact with the management and other members of the university community.
Meanwhile, the College Secretary, Dr Muyiwa Ajayi, reminded the new students that postgraduate studies at Babcock required strict compliance with the institution’s academic regulations.
Ajayi disclosed that postgraduate students were required to register every semester and pay their fees on a semester-by-semester basis.
He further emphasised the importance of regular attendance, warning that students must attend at least 75 per cent of lectures to qualify to sit for examinations.
“In PG School, we register every semester and fees are paid semesterly. Attendance is mandatory and students are expected to be seated 10 minutes before lectures.
“Besides, they must have 75 per cent attendance in order to sit for exams,” he said.
The university pastor, Dr Opeyemi Oladosu, offered prayers for the new students and encouraged them to seek divine guidance throughout their academic journey.
Oladosu, who described God as the ultimate source of knowledge and wisdom, cited passages from Proverbs 3:5-6, James 1:5, Isaiah 41:16, Philippians 4:19 and Psalm 121:7-8, urging the students to trust in God’s promises.
The postgraduate coordinators also reassured the students of the support of the college throughout their studies.
Among them were Dr Olufunso Akinboye, Agriculture Department Coordinator, and Dr Charles Ogboi, Finance Department Coordinator.
The coordinators encouraged the students to take advantage of the academic environment and support systems available to them, assuring them that they had chosen the right institution for their postgraduate education.
