Ballon d’Or: Messi still the best – Martino names player to win 2024 award

Inter Miami head coach, Gerardo “Tata” Martino, has said he believes Vinícius Júnior deserves to win this year’s Ballon d’Or award.

However, Martino insists Lionel Messi is “the best” player in the world.

Vinícius Jr is the big favourite to win the prize on Monday, along with Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

The Real Madrid forward scored 24 goals and provided 11 assists as Los Blancos won both the LaLiga and Champions League titles.

“It [the Ballon d’Or] has never been something that caught my attention, nor was it clear to me whether the award is for the best in the world or of the year,” Martino said.

“Vinícius Júnior probably has the merit [of being the best last season], although if you ask me who is the best right now, it’s Messi.”
