Suspected bandits have abducted the All Progressives Congress chairman in Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State, Abdullahi Fanka Beli, following a fresh overnight attack on Beli community.
The attackers reportedly invaded the community around 1am on Tuesday, shooting sporadically before proceeding to the residence of the APC chairman.
Sources said the gunmen forced their way into Beli’s home, seized him and fled the community with the politician.
A resident was reportedly killed during the attack, while several others were said to have sustained gunshot injuries.
However, the casualty figures could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report.
The latest incident has heightened concerns over the growing security challenges confronting rural communities in parts of Kano State.
Beli is said to be a close associate of the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibril Ismail Falgore, who hails from Rogo Local Government Area.
The attack came barely three days after a series of violent incidents were reported in communities across the state.
On Sunday, suspected gunmen reportedly invaded Chiromawa community in Garun Malam Local Government Area, killing three people and abducting an elderly resident.
The elderly victim was later reported to have escaped from captivity.
On Monday night, gunmen also reportedly attacked Rantan community in Bebeji Local Government Area, where two residents, including an APC ward chairman, Garba Buba, were allegedly killed.
The succession of attacks has triggered fresh anxiety among residents of the affected communities, with calls mounting for security agencies to intensify patrols and take decisive action against criminal gangs operating in rural areas.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Police Command had yet to publicly confirm the Beli attack or disclose details of any operation to rescue the abducted APC chairman.
The identities of the attackers and their motives also remained unclear.
