Bauchi Assembly pushes for transparency, accountability in LG finances

The Bauchi State House of Assembly Committee on Finance and Economic Development has intensified efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in local governments.

Speaking during an oversight visit to Gamawa and Dambam local governments on Thursday, the Committee’s Chairman, Ibrahim Burra, urged chairmen of the state’s 20 local government areas to maintain proper financial records and adhere to due process in handling public funds.

He clarified that the visit was meant to assess and verify financial transactions at the local government level, ensuring accountability rather than conducting a witch hunt.

Burra explained that the initiative is part of a broader effort by the lawmakers to maintain strict oversight of how local councils manage public funds.

“The goal is to foster transparency and restore public trust in governance across the state, ” he said.

Responding, the Chairman of Gamawa Local Government, Madaki Gololo, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to financial prudence.

He noted that since assuming office, his team has prioritized proper record-keeping and responsible resource management to enhance transparency in handling public funds.

Gololo added that his council has been focused on diversifying economic strategies to address the challenges faced by citizens, many of whom are struggling to meet basic survival needs.

He added that the local government has implemented strict measures to ensure all income streams are fully accounted for, with up-to-date financial records to boost revenue generation.
