Former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has scolded the Federal Government’s handling of the oil sector, demanding that Nigerians be told the truth about the controversial fuel subsidy removal.
Addressing the press in Lagos on Thursday, George condemned the government’s lack of transparency and warned that its failure to clarify the situation is fueling public unrest and distrust.
“The Federal Government needs to come clean. One day we hear there is a subsidy, the next day it’s gone—Nigerians deserve the truth,” George asserted.
“This back-and-forth is creating chaos. Where is the transparency? Who should we believe?”
The PDP chieftain also turned his sights on the Lagos State Government, demanding accountability over a $100 million payment allegedly made by Aliko Dangote for the land where his Lekki refinery is situated.
George questioned who benefited from this substantial sum, pointing to the grievances of Lekki landowners who claim their land was unjustly seized by the government.
“Aliko Dangote says he paid $100 million for the land. But who got that money? Certainly not the original landowners, who are now bitter and displaced,” George argued.
He urged the Lagos State Government to provide a full disclosure on the transaction, implying that the land deal might have been a cover for corrupt practices.
George did not mince words when condemning the Federal Government’s decision to sell crude oil to Dangote’s refinery in naira, labeling it as a potential economic disaster.
He warned that such a move could cripple Nigeria’s economy by stripping the nation of its primary source of foreign currency—a critical component for maintaining external reserves.
“This decision to sell crude in naira is a ticking time bomb. Crude oil is our major income generator, bringing in foreign currency that bolsters our external reserves.
“But now, our reserves are already depleted, and this policy could be the final nail in the coffin,” George cautioned.
George also expressed alarm over the recent statement by Mele Kyari, the Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), who indicated that he would speak “at the appropriate time” on the fuel subsidy issue.
George slammed the statement as reckless, given the urgent need for clarity.
“Kyari’s vague promise to speak ‘at the right time’ is unacceptable. Rome is burning, and yet the Emperor is asleep.
“We don’t have time for cryptic remarks—the time to speak is now,” George declared, underscoring the gravity of the situation
