Boko Haram Connives With Warders, Operates From Prisons-Defence Chief

Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has revealed  a troubling revelation about Boko Haram’s activities within prisons across the country. General Musa  said this during a sectoral debate organized by the House of Representatives in Abuja.

He explained that Boko Haram members held in these prisons continue to orchestrate criminal operations, including planning attacks and transferring funds to the field.

This alarming information was shared on Tuesday, during the plenary session, where service chiefs, including the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Air Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, and the Inspector General of Police, discussed the challenges faced by security agencies and strategies to overcome them.

General Musa highlighted that, while debriefing Boko Haram elements in the North-East, it was discovered that some prison warders were aiding the terrorists.

The insurgents revealed that they utilized certain warders to pass funds and coordinate operations from behind bars. General Musa emphasized that not all prison warders were involved, but the collaboration with those who were complicit posed a significant challenge.

He stated, “They passed funds across and we asked how. They told us they use some of the warders.

” We are not saying all of them are bad, but they use some of the warders’ accounts to transfer money, and the deal is anybody whose account it is transferred shared it 50-50. Those are the challenges.”

The gravity of this revelation adds a new dimension to the ongoing efforts to counter Boko Haram’s activities.

The House of Representatives had rescheduled the meeting to address these security concerns after the initial delay caused by the absence of the security chiefs in person.

The service chiefs discussed the reasons behind the perceived under-performance of security agencies and outlined strategies to enhance the country’s security landscape.
